SpotWriter
The easy way to write, store and print radio commercial copy.
Copyright (c) 1993 Ned Attayek
All Rights Reserved
SpotWriter is the easy way to write, store, sort and print
radio commercial copy. It's so easy to learn and use that if you
can use a typewriter you'll be running SpotWriter in a matter of
minutes. The SpotWriter screen looks just like a sheet of copy
paper. Just fill in the blanks for Sponsor, Product, Length,
Spec Date, Start Date, End Date, any special production notes,
and then write your copy. SpotWriter will save your copy, retrieve
it for editing and print it for production. It will also print
your script to a standard notarizaton form for co-op billing.
And SpotWriter does it all at the touch of a button!
page 2
INSTALLING and STARTING SpotWriter
SpotWriter has been tested on a variety of IBM-compatibles,
and has been found to run from floppy and on XT's but a great deal
of speed is sacrificed. A 286 or higher and a color monitor are
recommended.
To install SpotWriter, create a directory on your hard-drive
named SPWRITER and copy all of the original SpotWriter files to
that directory. Check your operating system manual for details
on how to make directories and copy files. SpotWriter makes no
changes or alterations to your system, boot-up files or operating
environment.
From the SpotWriter directory, type SPWRITER and hit <enter>.
The demonstration version of SpotWriter may begin with a welcome
screen that includes a few instructional notes to help you get
started. The registered version may or may not include the
welcome screen.
SpotWriter comes configured to run on a color monitor, but it
can easily be configured to operate on a monochrome monitor. When
you first run the program, go to the Help menu and select "Utilities"
for instructions on how to set up SpotWriter for best results on
a monochrome monitor. These instructions are also included in
this document.
OPERATING SpotWriter
The Menu Bar
The SpotWriter menu bar displays the following drop-down menus:
Files Print Clipboard Utilities Help
The Files drop-down menu displays the following command list:
Begin New - clears the screen to begin a new script
Edit Old - displays a dialog box to locate and load a
previously named and saved script
Save - displays a dialog box to name and save a loaded
script to a script file
Exit - exits SpotWriter
The Print drop-down menu displays the following command list:
Print Script - prints a loaded script for production
Print Notary - prints a loaded script to a standard
notarization form for co-op billing
Print Manual - prints this document
Print Order Form - prints the SpotWriter order form
The Print Manual and Print Order Form commands may or may not
be included in the registered version of SpotWriter.
page 3
The Clipboard drop-down menu displays the following command list:
Cut - edits selected text out of the loaded script and stores
it on an invisible clipboard for pasting onto another
script
Copy - copies selected text from the loaded script and stores
it on the invisible clipboard for pasting onto another
script, but does not edit the selected text from the
loaded script
Paste - inserts the text that is stored on the clipboard to
a selected location on a loaded script
The Utilities drop-down menu displays the following command list:
Set Colors - lets you customize various colors of SpotWriter
Shell to DOS - allows you to temporarily drop to your
operating system without exiting SpotWriter
The Help drop-down menu provides a list of help screens that
pertain to many of SpotWriter's functions and capabilities, including
an "About" screen that displays information on contacting the author
for information and assistance.
SpotWriter is fully mouse-compatible, so you can simply point and
click or double-click any menu, list item or command button. Menus
and commands can also be accessed with your keyboard.
The ALT key activates the menu bar and highlights items. Move
from one item to another along the menu bar or down a menu list with
the ARROW keys. Select a menu or list item with the ENTER key, or
type the highlighted access letter, or use the short-cut keys that
may be displayed to the right of some menu list items.
Writing Commercial Copy
The main SpotWriter screen includes a title bar, a menu bar,
a fill-in-the-blank header information area and a script text area.
As soon as the main screen is displayed, SpotWriter is ready for
you to begin writing your script.
Fill in the header areas with the appropriate information.
The ENTER and the TAB keys will move the text cursor to the next
information area. Here are the header information areas in the
cycle order in which they are accessed:
Sponsor: the name of the commercial sponsor
Product: the product to be advertised
Length: the length of the commercial
Spec Date: date the production is due for audition or approval
Start Date: first date the commercial goes on the air
End Date: last date the commercial airs
Notes: for production notes such as jingle cuts, music cuts,
sound effects, master tape reel numbers, talent names,
special instructions, etc.
script text area: the space where you type your spot copy
page 4
The File Name area is not accessible by the user. SpotWriter
will automatically display the File Name after you have saved the
script to a script file and given it a File Name with the "Save"
command on the Files menu. SpotWriter will also display the File
Name of a script file retrieved for editing with the "Edit Old"
command from the File Menu.
Note that if a File Name is displayed on the main screen,
this should be used as an indication that the currently loaded
script has been previously saved to disk.
The large text area on the main script is where you type in
your commercial script. This area behaves much like many word
processing programs and text editors, with many of the same key-
stroke controls, including the INSert key to toggle between the
insert and overtype modes, the BACKSPACE and DELete keys, and
many others. The ARROW keys will move the cursor left and right,
and scroll up and down. The ENTER or RETURN key acts as a
carriage return while the text cursor is in the script text area,
and word-wrap is automatic. Note that since the ENTER or RETURN
key is used for a carraige return, the TAB key must be used to
move the text cursor back up to the header information area rather
than for indentation in the script text area. Type CNTRL-I (hold
down the CNTRL key and press the letter "I") to indent the cursor
in the script text area. A mouse can also be used to place the
text cursor, and to scroll up and down the script text area using
the scroll bar to the right of the script text area. To double-
space a script, simply hit ENTER or RETURN on a blank line.
Beginning a New Script
When SpotWriter first displays the main screen, it is ready for
you to begin writing your spot copy. To clear the screen, use the
"Begin New" command on the Files menu. If information in the loaded
script has changed since it was first loaded, SpotWriter will ask you
if you'd like to save your changes before you clear the screen.
page 5
Editing an Old Script
To load a previously saved script file into SpotWriter, select
the "Edit Old" command from the file menu. A dialog box will appear
to allow you to type in the name of the script file you want to edit,
or let you search drives and directories for a particular file and
select it.
SpotWriter will not load files that were not created with the
SpotWriter program.
The dialog boxes displayed by the "Edit Old" command and the
"Save" command provide an area in which you may type in the name of
a script file, an alphabetized list of files in the current directory,
a drop-down list of available drives, a drop-down list of available
directories and subdirectories, and the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons.
You can move from one dialog box item to the next and access drop-
down lists by hitting the TAB key and using the ARROW keys, or you
can use a mouse to point and click or double-click. Select the
script file you want to edit and SpotWriter will automatically
load it onto the main screen and remove the dialog box.
Note that if you are editing a script file that has previously
been saved, the File Name is displayed in the appropriate area on
the main screen. The appearance of a File Name on the main screen
should be used as an indication that the currently loaded script
has been saved to disk. After editing the script, if you execute
the "Save" command from the Files menu to save the edited version
of the script, the File Name displayed on the main screen will
automatically be entered in the File Name area on the "Save"
dialog box. At that point, if you use the same File Name and
save the script, SpotWriter will over-write the old script with
your new edited version of the script. If you want to keep the
original version of the script, simply give the new version a
different name in the File Name area on the "Save" dialog box.
In some SpotWriter dialog boxes, the ESCape key cancels the
dialog box and returns you to the main screen. You can toggle the
highlighted "OK" or "Cancel" buttons, or the "Yes" or "No" buttons
by using the TAB key or the ARROW keys. You can also execute the
highlighted command button letters "Y" and "N" by typing ALT-Y or
ALT-N.
page 6
Saving a Loaded Script
To save a script, select the "Save" command from the File menu
to display a dialog box that will allow you to type in a File Name.
The dialog box will also let you save the file to a drive and directory
of your choice. SpotWriter supports any valid file name, that is,
up to 8 characters, plus up to 3 characters, separated by a period,
such as "XXXXXXXX.XXX" using any character accepted by your operating
system for use in file names.
Note that if a File Name appears in the File Name area on the
main screen, that File Name will automatically be displayed in the
File Name area on the "Save" dialog box. This should be used as an
indication that the currently loaded script file as been previously
saved. If you have edited the script and you save it to the same
File Name, the old version of the script will over-written by the
new version. To retain the old version of the script and save the
edited version to a new script file, simply give the new version
a different File Name.
When saving script files, you might consider designing a
naming scheme of some sort. As an example, you could use the 3
file name extension characters as an indication of when the script
was written or aired. The file name XXXXXXXX.393 would indicate
that the spot was written in March of 1993. Since the SpotWriter
dialog box accepts operating system wildcards "?" and "*" you could
easily search a directory for all the files with the .393 extension.
The file list on the dialog box automatically lists files in
alphabetical order, so finding files that have been named using a
well conceived naming scheme can be quick and easy.
The same consideration can be giving to directories and sub-
directories used to store script files on your hard-drive. You may
wish to devise separate directories or subdirectories in which to
store script files in catagories of your own design. The dialog
boxes that are displayed with the "Edit Old" and "Save" commands
from the File menu can access any valid drive or directory on your
system. The dialog boxes also "remember" the drive and directory
most recently accessed.
In other words, SpotWriter provides the means for making script
file storage and retrieval simple and easy. The organization is
up to you.
Exiting SpotWriter
To exit SpotWriter, select the "Exit" command from the Files
menu. If changes have been made to the loaded script, SpotWriter
will ask if you'd like to save it to a script file before you exit.
page 7
Printing Scripts
To print a loaded script for production, select "Print Script"
from the Print menu. To print a loaded script to a standard
notarization form for co-op billing, select "Print Notary" from
the Print menu.
SpotWriter is configured to send all print output to the
LPT1 device, that is, a parallel printer connected to your system's
parallel port LPT1. To send print output to another port, parallel
or serial, you must re-route or re-direct the LPT1 output with
the DOS mode command. See your operating system manual for details.
The registered version of SpotWriter comes customized to include
your station's name/call-letters displayed on the menu title bar and
on printed script and notarization forms. Further customization of
the printed forms may be available in certain cases, for an extra
fee. Contact the author for information.
Printing the Instruction Manual
To print the SpotWriter instruction manual (this document)
select the "Print Manual" command on the Print menu. The text
file MANUAL.DOC (this document) must be in the SpotWriter
directory.
You may also print the instruction manual from your system's
command line. For example, at your system's command prompt in the
SpotWriter directory, type:
print manual.doc
(or)
copy manual.doc prn
(or)
type manual.doc > prn
Printing the Order Form
The Order Form is automatically printed as the last page of
the Instruction Manual. It can also be printed alone. Select
"Print Order Form" from the Print menu. This function may be
operable in both the demonstration and registered versions of
SpotWriter so that Order Forms may be readily available. You are
free to distribute the Order Forms.
Although the Order Form provides a convenient way to order
SpotWriter, using the Order Form is not absolutely necessary.
Detailed ordering and price information is included in this
document.
The Print Manual and Print Order Form commands may or may not
be available in the registered version of SpotWriter.
page 8
Clipboard
The Clipboard is an invisible text area to which to you can
store text that is cut (edited) or copied from a loaded script and
from which you can insert stored text into a loaded script.
To select text for cutting or copying to the clipboard, place
the text cursor at the beginning of the text you want to cut or copy,
and while holding down the SHIFT key, use the ARROW keys to highlight
the selected text. You may also use your mouse to mark and drag to
highlight selected text. Then, choose either the "Cut" or the "Copy"
commands from the Clipboard menu. Your selected text is now stored
on the Clipboard. Now you can load a different script or start a
new script and insert the saved text.
To insert selected text from the Clipboard to a script, place
the text cursor where you want the selected text to be inserted
and select the "Paste" command from the Clipboard menu. The text
stored on the Clipboard is automatically inserted into the loaded
script.
Text stored on the Clipboard remains on the Clipboard until
it is replaced by cutting or copying new text to the Clipboard or
until you exit SpotWriter.
Setting SpotWriter Screen Colors
You can configure SpotWriter to display in your choice of
color combinations. To configure SpotWriter colors, select the
"Set Colors" command from the Utilities menu to display a dialog
box. Move from one selection to another by using the TAB and
ARROW keys, or use a mouse to point and click. SpotWriter will
"remember" your color settings.
For best results on a monochrome monitor, select the "Default"
button on the Set Colors dialog box. This forces SpotWriter to
operate in black and white. Then, disable "3-D" to insure proper
display of the SpotWriter screens.
Shell to DOS
The "Shell to DOS" command on the Utilities menu provides a way
for you to drop to your computer's operating system and execute
DOS commands or run programs without exiting SpotWriter. To return
to SpotWriter after a shell to DOS, type EXIT at your system prompt.
SpotWriter remains in memory during a shell, so all of your system's
memory will not be available and programs that require large amounts
of system memory may not run in the shell.
